The Triumphant Trump and His Promises to Global Sustainability

By: Eric Adile

Donald Trump’s re-election in the 2024 U.S. presidential race marks a significant moment in both American and global politics. The journey to this victory was anything but straightforward, marred by legal battles, personal controversies, an assassination attempt, and significant opposition from political and international establishments. Trump victory is a symbol of populist resilience and defiance, despite faced with a seemingly insurmountable wave of global criticism, promising a renewed approach to leadership both domestically and globally. His unexpected win has stirred up debates about the future of sustainability, international relations, and America’s role in achieving the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. Now, with a mandate from the American people, the question on everyone’s mind is: What does Trump’s second term mean for global sustainability?

This question takes on added importance given the world’s urgent need to address sustainable development, with only a few years remaining to meet the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Trump’s promises during his campaign touched on everything from American economic growth to international relations, giving hope to some that his leadership might spur positive change on a global scale, while others remain skeptical of his commitment to global sustainability – a crucial topic as the world races to address climate change, inequality, and sustainable economic development. From Africa to the Middle East, from China to Europe, and from the U.S. economy to global peace, Trump’s return to power comes with promises to reshape the international landscape.

Trump’s journey to reclaim the White House was unprecedented. After his first term ended in controversy and divisive rhetoric, he remained a polarizing figure. His second campaign was marked by ongoing legal battles, including charges of alleged financial mismanagement and accusations linked to attempts to undermine U.S. democratic institutions. While many political figures would have been weakened by such controversies, Trump seemed to thrive amid adversity, using his challenges as evidence of his persecution by a “deep state” out to silence him.

An assassination attempt in early 2024 only added to the intensity of the election cycle. Trump, however, capitalized on the public sympathy generated by the attempt on his life, portraying himself as a resilient leader willing to face any threat for the sake of America. His campaign doubled down on themes of strength, resilience, and unwavering patriotism. This combination of narrative control and populist appeal galvanized his base, allowing him to secure victory despite the numerous hurdles.

Trump’s re-election was met with skepticism from global leaders, many of whom expressed concerns about his potential isolationist policies and unpredictable approach to international alliances. Throughout his first term and subsequent years, Trump’s “America First” rhetoric led to strained relationships with several allies, including European nations, NATO partners, and countries in Asia and Africa. His hardline stance on immigration, environmental policies, and trade protectionism further fueled opposition globally.

This global rejection presented both a challenge and an opportunity for Trump. While he remained defiant in the face of international criticism, he hinted during his campaign at a new vision for global relations that would prioritize sustainable economic partnerships. Trump’s rhetoric suggested a pragmatic shift toward targeted sustainability initiatives that could benefit both the U.S. and its partners, especially in Africa, the Middle East, and other developing regions. His promise was to advance global sustainability but with an emphasis on “mutual benefit” and respect for American interests.

Trump’s second term arrives at a critical time, as the world faces the 2030 deadline for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals encompass a range of issues, from poverty eradication to climate action, and aim to foster a world where development is sustainable and inclusive.

While Trump has historically been skeptical of multilateral commitments on climate change, he has pledged to pursue a form of “sustainability” that aligns with American interests. His administration has promised to promote green technology innovations and American-led research in renewable energy. However, Trump’s version of sustainability emphasizes economic growth and job creation over strict environmental regulation, a stance that has led to concerns about the impact on global climate efforts. Yet, Trump argues that his approach will allow the U.S. to lead by example, promoting a model of sustainability that integrates economic strength with environmental responsibility.

Trump’s promises to Africa during his campaign centered around economic empowerment and reduced dependence on foreign aid. He advocated for “mutual partnerships” that would enable African countries to capitalize on their resources rather than relying on aid that, he argued, often comes with strings attached. His administration has outlined plans to support African entrepreneurship, focusing on infrastructure development, particularly in energy and digital technologies.

Trump also pledged to combat youth unemployment in Africa, a key factor for sustainable development on the continent. By fostering partnerships that prioritize job creation, skill development, and local manufacturing, Trump believes his policies could pave the way for Africa’s economic independence and sustainability. However, critics argue that his focus on economic benefits for the U.S. could limit the effectiveness of these initiatives, especially if they prioritize American companies and interests over local needs.

The Middle East remains one of the world’s most volatile regions, with conflicts in Syria, Yemen, and tensions between Israel and Palestine. Trump has promised to build on the foundation of the Abraham Accords, a set of normalization agreements between Israel and several Arab nations, as a pathway to peace and stability in the region.

Trump’s approach to Middle Eastern peace emphasizes economic partnerships and development over direct intervention. His administration has committed to investing in economic infrastructure that can support stability, including clean energy projects and water management systems, which are critical for sustainability in arid regions. However, his policies have been met with skepticism, with some critics arguing that an economic-focused approach may not address the deep-rooted political and social issues that underlie regional conflicts.

One of Trump’s most challenging promises is to recalibrate the relationship between China and the West. Trump has been a vocal critic of China’s trade practices and has accused the country of undermining American economic interests. However, his re-election campaign also hinted at the need for a more pragmatic approach, acknowledging that China’s involvement is essential for global stability and sustainability.

In his second term, Trump has promised to engage in “tough but fair” negotiations with China, focusing on areas like intellectual property rights, trade balance, and environmental cooperation. He has pledged to collaborate with China on sustainability issues such as clean energy and climate resilience, provided that China reciprocates in trade and respects American business interests. The sustainability of this relationship remains uncertain, but Trump’s promises suggest a willingness to maintain a constructive dialogue.

Trump’s strained relationship with the European Union (EU) has often centered around trade imbalances, NATO funding, and environmental policy differences. During his campaign, he promised to rebuild this relationship through “fairer” trade agreements and a stronger focus on joint sustainability initiatives.

Trump has proposed a framework for transatlantic cooperation on green technology, renewable energy, and sustainable infrastructure. This framework could lead to collaborations that benefit both the U.S. and EU member states, particularly in advancing the circular economy and carbon reduction goals. However, Trump’s commitment to deregulation within the U.S. has raised concerns in Europe, where environmental policies are often more stringent.

Trump’s relationship with Israel has always been close, and he has promised continued support for Israel’s security and regional stability. His administration has proposed further economic and technological partnerships with Israel, focusing on cybersecurity, water technology, and desert agriculture. These initiatives are seen as crucial for Israel’s sustainability, particularly as it faces environmental challenges.

In Ukraine, Trump has promised support for rebuilding and economic recovery, particularly as Ukraine continues to deal with the fallout from the ongoing conflict with Russia. While he has been cautious about direct military intervention, his administration has pledged to support infrastructure projects and economic aid that can foster Ukraine’s sustainability.

Trump’s primary focus remains on the economic strength of the U.S., with promises to boost job creation, revitalize American manufacturing, and reduce reliance on foreign imports. His second term plans include significant investments in infrastructure, particularly in rural areas, which he argues will promote social sustainability by bridging the urban-rural divide.

On social issues, Trump has promised to address challenges such as homelessness, mental health, and drug addiction, all of which contribute to social instability. His administration’s approach is likely to emphasize private sector involvement and deregulation as tools for social sustainability, which has drawn criticism from those who believe stronger government intervention is needed.

Trump’s approach to world peace has always been rooted in a strong national defense and limited foreign intervention. He believes that a secure and economically stable U.S. will contribute to global stability. His administration has promised to prioritize diplomacy over military intervention, with a focus on peace through strength.

Trump’s world peace promises extend to addressing global issues such as terrorism, cyber warfare, and nuclear proliferation. His administration has pledged to work with allies to create a safer world, though his emphasis remains on American interests.

Trump’s campaign often spoke to the “forgotten man and woman,” encouraging individuals to pursue their dreams and rise above obstacles. He has promised to create an environment where Americans can succeed on their own terms, which he argues is a cornerstone of sustainability. By fostering self-reliance and ambition, Trump believes that individuals will contribute to the country’s economic and social strength.

Trump’s return to power brings with it a mixed bag of promises and policies that will undoubtedly shape the global sustainability landscape. From promoting economic independence and social cohesion at home to advocating for stability and growth abroad, Trump’s approach reflects his “America First” ideology. While his policies may face criticism for prioritizing national interests, his administration claims that these priorities will ultimately contribute to a more stable and sustainable world.

As the world approaches the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals deadline, Trump’s leadership will be pivotal in determining the course of global sustainability efforts. His supporters believe he is the bold leader needed to achieve these goals, while critics remain wary of the long-term implications of his policies. Regardless, Trump’s triumphant return to the White House has set the stage for a transformative era in global politics and sustainability.
